Ok, we have probably all played some in our past, or we might probably playing some right now? Why don't we share our little horror game stories.

I remember a very old SNES game called Clock Tower, now, I do know that there are several versions of it. The PC version even has a large chapter stationed in Norway. The infamus Scissorman, or Scissormurderer as someone calls him really made me have a hard time with nightmares some time in the past. XD Good times.... Good times. There is no denying the great 2d horror action of the SNES and the poly awesomeness of the old generation of pc horror games.

Right now I am playing Dead Space, which might be the best modern horror game I can recall playing. Just made it to chapter 3 and I tell you, medical facilities are not a cosy place to be in when you are faceing such a nasty type of foe. I think the overall best achivement of the game is how the compose the lights in some of the regions, not to mention the moments they sometimes remove it. Oh, and gotta love it when enemies surrond you or creep up unexpectely behind you. Even when the enemy music is dead.

Now there are plenty of games to mention. FEAR, the expantion pack and FEAR 2 that will come out some time in the future are something I would defidently include in this category. Any games that is high on fear which includes anything from mystery-games to more direct shooter games. I would even include some games that has some terror elements like the Max Payne series and his nightmares. There is alot to find, and alot to like. While some games are not directly labeled as horror games, they can and should be included in a thread like this.

So, do share with us. What are you playing, what have you played and what's your take on it? Do the deep horror theme disturb you the most or are cheap scares what makes you react to the game?

The only scary game I've played is Doom 3. Play at night with all the lights out and use head phones. I think the game uses cheaper scares, but it scared me nonetheless. The whispers and the PDA recording were a bit chilling at times too.

Eternal Darkness is the most recent horror game I (and one of my suitemates) have been playing. Personally I don't find it to be to frightening except for a few moments in the mansion with Alex. Of course this game has given me and my suite mate more "GAH HOW COULD THIS BE HAPPENING...oh wait it's just a part of the gameplay" moments. Great game though especially when you get to the final boss fights which are too epic to be described...yeah...awesome...

Killer7 isn't necessarily a horror game, but it's sure creepy. XD I'm currently in the beginning of the fourth act right now.

How did this thread survive so long without anyone mentioning RE4? That's the scariest game I've ever played. I say, if I ever hear that sound the regenerators make outside of the context of the game, I'll have a heart attack.

YES.
I thought the scariest part was where you play the WWII soldier in the church. The first mansion chapter with the doctor was also pretty creepy. Oh, but the chapter with the firefighter is also really scary!

And, although it wasn't a horror game, Ocarina of Time had some really scary parts (to me). Especially in the well, where you don't get the comfort of being a big strong adult.

I'm not big on the whole horror genre, but I did enjoy the "Chzo Mythos" series of freeware adventure games. The graphics are simple, but effective; the sounds are somewhat Spartan but used well. The story is strange and interesting. I would almost call it Lovecraft-esque, but I haven't read any Lovecraft - I only know of his work by reputation. They're worth looking up (they can be played on both PC and Mac) if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Has anyone played Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green for Xbox? It was pretty good for a movie based game. I'm a fan of Zombie games (especially the RE series) and so I bought a copy. It's a first person shooter so seeing a zombie face to face gets really scary; especially when they sneak up behind you.

Bioshock is pretty horrific
Thief 1 - the Return to the Cathedral level
Thief: Deadly Shadows - the Cradle level

(the Thief games have many horrific elements - I'm talking truly terrifying, your weaponry is pretty much useless against supernatural creatures/beings).

Silent Hill 3. That game is wrong and sick in soooo many ways. I love it.

I wondered if anyone was going to mention Silent Hill. Me, I'm a freak for Silent Hill. My all-time favorite game series. Zombies and other science-experiments-gone-wrong jumping out at you all "Booga-Booga-Booga!" only carry me so far. But when the enemies are physical manifestations of elements within the characters' own messed-up psyches, well . . . that's something else entirely.

The Silent Hill series sounds awesome! (so it's more psychological horror? I love that stuff).
Is it for PC also? I sure hope so.

All of the games after the first were ported to PC, I'm pretty sure. They have 2 and 3 on GameTap...I'm thinking I'm gonna check them out.

As for horror games I've actually played...I've only played one that I really remember, actually. American McGee's Alice. Freaked me out so badly that I threw it away...an overreaction that I truly regret, now.

American McGee's Alice? That looked great but I've heard the game-play was a bit sub-standard or generic. Wouldn't mind playing it now to find out but it's so rare.

Um... I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, though I never beat Origins and I haven't gotten a chance to play Homecoming yet. I believe part 2 and 3 are on PC, maybe 4, but not Origins as far as I know (PSP and PS2 only), and I'm not sure about Homecoming.

Besides Silent Hill, I own Siren: Blood Curse, which was made by the original creator of Silent Hill who left Konami after SH2 to go over to Sony. The silent hill games are definitely superior (at least 1-4), but Siren has its charms... The last battle essentially takes place inside of a kaleidoscope, for instance... Made me think I was playing Mother 4. Thing about Siren is it's a LOT harder than Silent Hill... Because it doesn't have riddles in it, the difficulty is based on escaping. It's easier than the original on the PS2, but only so much. I mean, at least all the characters but the little girl (I'm wanting to call her Stella, but it's been a while since i touched it) have weapons, which is a nice change from the first game, where for the first half of the game, no one had any weapons.

I guess Bioshock is considered Horror. I like Bioshock, too.

Bobtheduck, Homecoming is available on Steam. And let me warn you, the difficulty is cranked up pretty far. Save points are few and far between, health and ammo are sparse and emphasis seems to have been shifted from exploration to combat (especially melee combat). It's still a great game, but don't expect to coast through it.
And I recommend beating Zer0rigins, if only for the unlockable costumes (and try the Konami Code during gameplay your second time through!)

FEAR, its expansion which I'm glad will be ignored in FEAR 2 Project Origin for reasons of my own. I'm sure FEAR 2 will be even more chilling and action packed and cant wait to play it XD.

Aha. That was going to be my question. I am currently spending money on things other than consoles]that[/I] is my wholesome childhood memory, no wonder I'm in love with the macabre), and the visuals I've scene for the game give me warm fuzzies.

The first Silent Hill is only available for the Playstation.

On a related note, I'm in the apartment building in Silent Hill 2. The game is absolutely terrifying. In a good way.

Though the scariest part thus far was having a close relative wander in during...*ahem* one of Pyramid Head's...earlier scenes...

I only wish the reflexes I used on the escape button at that moment could be applied in other games...

I'm sure you could download it (quite legally) somehow or other. There's not much that isn't available.

And yes, that bit's definitely an eyebrow-raiser.
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Pyramid Head! Yep, it's exactly what it looks like.

Left 4 Dead looks like it's going to be great.

EDIT: I just pre-purchased it and watched the newly released intro movie of the game. I seriously think this just might be one of the best horror zombie games ever. Forget about them slow and stupid zombies we keep seeing in movies and other games, this game is where it's at.

Yeah, left for dead has some enemies that in the middle of the combat just might think its a good idea to crawl up a went just to suprise you later when you think it is safe. The sound is the best part of the entire combat and the suspense often is greater than the action itself. About every time I see some enemy run off screen now I think of it as an indirect cutscene sequence. Also an enemy that's not really there if you know what I mean. At either rate, I am getting closer to the big beasts now. Its getting more and more fun.

I like survival horror games a lot.

I love such series as: Parasite Eve (1st one was horror RPG), Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Clock Tower, etc...

Also, enjoyed these games: Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose, Illbleed...

Some are RPGs with horror elements like the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series...

Then others are more action horror like Devil May Cry and Onimusha.

And these are underrated survival disaster games: Disaster Report and Raw Danger.
Those two games were really rather unique. Short but sweet games.

Oh, another really difficult horror game was Extermination for the PS2. Not many people liked it because it was really quite challenging. But, I kinda liked it. Even though it isn't a great game.

I tried to get into Rule of Rose. I wanted so much to like it. It really had potential. Now see, a few minor gameplay issues here and there are usually OK, but there were so many in RoR that I just couldn't take it anymore and had to stop. If it were a little more, shall we say, "user-friendly," it would no doubt be one of my favorite horror games.

So I've been playing the Left 4 Dead demo. This game is GREAT. The AI is very intelligent, and the game is always unpredictable (enemies and items are in different locations and what not in each play through).

Yeah, I understand. RoR is not an easy game to get into. It does take time and a bit of effort. I agree the gameplay maybe wasn't the best. But, it had a very interesting storyline. Interesting characters and also more than 1 ending. Although, there was one particular adult character that I truly disliked a lot.

It is a very bizarre game at times. So, that can definitely turn people away. Anyways, I liked it for the most part. Despite that it isn't a game for everyone. But, I'm also one that kinda likes games that aren't just action orientated. I love obscure games. Plus, with Resident Evil becoming more action orientated. I like getting survival horror that is much more about survival rather than heavy action. And, this is coming from a huge fan of RE including RE 4.

I really haven't played too many horror games, since for the most part I stink at them. I did manage to play through RE4 though and had a blast doing it, but it was pretty difficult for me.

I stumbled into Ravenholm completely unprepared. I thought, "Oh, here comes another average level." *gets torn to pieces*

It didn't help that I ran through all of my ammo about halfway through the level. Yep, me an' my crowbar have been through some hard times t'gether.

I used to love survival horror games, and then I played Devil May Cry and my taste shifted. Would I trade some semblance of a plot for the ability to unleash fast-paced carnage and feel really B.A. from the safety of my couch? Yes, I would.
