coming soon: the exinction of 2 player games? (my mini-rant)

Well this isn't so much a rant as it was an observation...

So, my boyfriend has a PS3 and 2 controllers. He has games like Motorstorm, a ONE player game BUT you can play with others online ONLY. Buys The Darkness, 1 player but 2+ online only as well >_< Now, I'm not sure if Xbox is doing this too with their Live, but it seems like a common trend now in PS3. I mean, I find it pretty lame that you can't even play a racing and shooter game with your friends and are forced to go online with it.

Yeah "extinction" is a little extreme a term, but it seems like A LOT of games are going towards this trend, unlike Nintendo with their pushing of party games. I mean, what's the point of even having 2 controllers if they games that you want to play can only be online people? I know I know, once again it isn't for ALL games, but you'd THINK you'd be able to with a racing game at the least...

EDIT: oops meant '2' instead of '3' in the title^^ If a mod can make a quick edit, thanks^^

Resistance is 4 players splitscreen... So is Calling all Cars. Sony's pushing online right now, but there will eventually be more party games on the PS3... its' what people want now, afterall...

Oh, and in contrast, Virtua Fighter 5 is 2 players, no online... Little Big Planet will be 4 players either on the system or online... I'm gonna guess most of the multiplayer on the box games will be FPS games or downloadables, at least until Sony has their online strategy secured.

Oh probably... Still, what can party games compare to classic shooters/racing/fighting games that we all know and love? To push the online is something else, even Nintendo's not doing that and you still have the option of either/or (once again, I know nothing of Xbox...)

Splitscreens are becoming disturbingly scarce. Even on Gears of War you can only get two people on a box at a time.

That's funny, I was almost certain that competitive multiplayer was more than 2 players on Gears... Never played competitve multiplayer, so I was going off second hand knowledge... I have yet to see a cooperative 4 player game on next gen, except the upcoming LBP...

More than two if you link boxes, but on one you can only get two. I do regular GoW nights at my place.

lol, there was a time when I was actually afraid of exactly the opposite happening; the "extinction" of 1 player games, in favor of multiplayer on-line games, or MMORPGs.

Online is being pushed in a big way right now, so I think that's why everything is going in that direction. It'll swing back this way, I think.
