Disclaimer: All threads made about PS3 news will be locked, while this thread is stickied. Threads made for discussions about specific PS3 games will be allowed.
I’ll try to keep this main page (and the post below) as updated as best I can with three key areas of interest below:

Heh... well, the other list is recently announced games... like really recent... otherwise, I'd have a really big list on my hands with games like Resident Evil 5, Medal of Honor, Armored Core 4, etc. Here's the impressive list of around 130 games on the PS3...
http://www.gamespot.com/games.html?type=games&platform=1028&mode=all&sort=title&dlx_type=all&sortdir=desc&page=1
(o’yeah, while browsing through the list, I saw Turok on there. Wow.)
But, yeah, if there's one reason why I want a PS3 it is MGS4... and that's all the reason I need. Warhawk's just a nice bonus.

Is it backwards compatible?

Yup, yup... there are a few games that may not work, though. Here's a slightly old article on the issue:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6136677.htmlAnd a quote:
Gamespot wrote:However, it was Sakamoto's comments regarding the PS3 that made the most headlines. When responding to questions about whether the SCPH-75000's backward-compatibility issues heralded similar problems with Sony's next-gen console, she demurred. "It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 percent backwards compatible, but as we said earlier this year, we aim to make it so as much as possible," Sakamoto said, according to IDG. Attempts to elicit clarifying comments from Sony Computer Entertainment America reps were unsuccessful as of press time.
While significant--ranging from frozen cinematics and sluggish data saves--the problems reported with the SCPH-75000 were not widespread. They plagued only a small portion of the 8,000 PS2 and PSOne games that Sony tested. It should also be noted that the PS2 is not 100 percent backward compatible either, as SCEA maintains a list of PSOne games that cannot play on the console.
And here's the link to the list of games that don't seem to work:

is it region free?

Yeah, it is, 100% region free this time
Games, hardware, probably online, all region free...

Speaking of being region free, I was hearing that it's possible that developers could put all of their region versions on one disc, if they want to completely fill a blu-ray disc and the game doesn’t already do that.

*slightly off topic*
One of my favorite PS1 games of all time, Legend of Legaia, didn't work right on the PS2...that was really disappointing. Hopefully the same thing won't happen with PS3.
EDIT: NOOOOOO! NOT LUNAR 2! T.T

Wow, Legaia worked on my PS2. Maybe mine was older/newer? I knew there was a reason I kept my PS1 though.

This has not been confirmed, but it is definitely something to watch out for. According to this
Gamasutra article, "Oblivion To Debut On PS3, PSP" Bethesda is rumored to announce on E3 to have Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in November 2006 in time for PS3 launch, and a version of some kind (maybe a side quest) on the PSP. This is all based on an inadvertently mailed version of publisher Bethesda's forthcoming game release list.
Well, let us wait and see, but if it is true, that can be big news for Sony.

i doubt that bethesda will be doing that...
http://psp.ign.com/articles/703/703231p1.html
"We contacted Bethesda and sadly they had very little grist to add to the rumor mill. Their official reply: "At present we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any platforms other than PC or Xbox 360."" - IGN
it would be sweet though

i am kinda hoping Oblivion doesn't come out for PS3. I don't now why but i just have a bad feeling if it does.

Hmm...
Considering the idea of a FPRPG doesn't interest me in the slightest, I don't care if Oblivion comes to the PS2... I'd rather have the top selling games on the system be stuff like Guns of the Patriots... Sorta like how I don't like so much focus on the PS2 ends up being about GTA... Sorta bugs me, but whatever... If it does, and it helps sony take the top, I guess I have to appreciate it, even if I don't buy it myself...
I REALLY hope Silent Hill 5 is on PS3, and I really hope it isn't a FPV game... The First Person thing in 4 wasn't that bad, but if they do that the whole game like they were threatening to do when 4 was first coming out, I'll be very upset...

YES that is soo stinking annoying *sighs* specially with all the GTA clones coming out it got really bland after a few months. MGS4 is gonna be a reason to buy the ps3 when it comes out.

Shouldn't the PS3 be out by now?
Another thing; Sony isn't very creative with their names, are they? (PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP...)

Sony definately has the most uninspired names... No doubt about that... But, they have the best controller (the dual shock) and they don't have the worst (which would be the wii controller) The worst controllers are the Wii, the Atari 5200, the dreamcast, the original X-box... the best are the SNES controller, the Dual shock, and maybe the new X-box controllers... Though the N64 controller was interesting, I just like the SNES/Dualshock model the best... Yeah, N invented it, but Sony Kept it... Until the boomerang, which they are ditching (thank the Lord!) I just hope the new PS3 controller doesn't end up sucking as bad as that boomerang...
But, Tidus, I'm pretty sure this isn't the place for console wars... This thread, I mean... And, yeah, I never used one, but I've used a wide variety of shapes for controllers, and I don't think that one would feel good, and it was just darned ugly...
EDIT: I want my PS1 back... And my PS2... *cries* I sent my brother my PS1, and I think it broke in the mail (he wasn't able to test it in time for me to cash in the insurance on it)

PSM via gametrailers.com wrote:Another interesting detail from the PSM article is that Sony is planning to make PlayStation and PS2 games play in 720p, 1080i, or 1080p on the PS3. No word on whether the company will re-tweak those games in any other ways, or if the software needed to emulate those games is expected to cause the incompatibilities that hampered Microsoft's Xbox 360 backward compatibility efforts thus far.
Hmm... At first glance this seems cool, but without other mods, it is going to be somewhat pointless... What's the point of upgrading to Hi-Def when it will just hilight how much it looks like crap compared to the new stuff? Of course, at the same time, I'm ecstatic about being able to play Silent Hill 3 in Hi-Def... That's a just plain pretty game, and it will be even more so now...
As for the tweaking of the emulation, they did that with PS1 games on the PS2, but the benefits were... sparse... It was pretty rare for it to mean anything. Hopefully the upgrades are better thought out in the next gen...

Big news from the Square-Enix press conference at E3:
Final Fantasy XIII (that's #13) announced for PS3. So, I'll eventually invest in a PS3 (as if there were any doubt).
Other news (including the Wii games I mentioned in that thread) at this link:
