Does anyone know of any good RPGs on the PS or PS2 that aren't loaded with magic? I just prefer not to play as a magic user, but i love the long term play and deep storylines of a good RPG.

Hmm... What's your definition of a role playing game?? In the two extremes, EVERY video game is an RPG, and NO video games are RPG's. There are some games out there that have great stories that the main character doesn't use magic...

Metal Gear Solid 2 has a very deep storyline... It's very action oriented, but it's storyline is deeper than, say, the first few Final Fantasy games... Deep to the point many people call it "confusing" and "psychobable" at the end... Deep to the point it takes a lot of effort to figure out what's going on. There is a lot of cinematics, which really bothered the action fans who just wanted a shoot-em-up.
There is really only one truely mystical character in the game, and that*s Vamp... He is one of the bad guys, by the way.
Other than that, I can't think of any RPG's that don't make use of some supernatural thing (whether it be Magic, or psychic powers, or alchemy, or some made up thing that could be called magic) though some games where you can play through the entire thing without USING magic.

Deus Ex..... FPS/RPG combo.... killer game.... ported to the PS2 from it's original PC version.

BTW Bob, I finished MGS2 yesterday (or was it Saturday?).... pretty good game, but I personally found the controls a bit fidgety, and the mostly fixed camera game me fits, but not enough to drop the game eh? :D

The only RPG I've ever played that didn't rely on magic of some nature or another was Earthbound (aka Mother), which relied on psychic power, which you may find just as bad...O.o

You picked the wrong genre. 99% of RPGs are going to have some sort of a "magic" system. They aren't going to work without one. The only RPGs like you described that I can think of are a few sci-fi games(like Xenosaga) where the "magic" is technology based.

well mabe we should do something about that. :) I'm playing with an idea where the game is set in a fantasy style world where there is magic, but the PCs don't use it, they have to use other means to beat the wizards.

Tough to say, almost all rpgs do encorperate it somewere....there is one rpg I can think of for the ps2 and that is Ephemeral Fantasia, also known as Reiseled. It was an average rpg with a big cast of characters but doesnt rely on magic at all. *shrugs*

Or you could always switch to the "Harvest Moon" side of rpgs if you get desperate :P

I don't really know of any Rpgs except Parasite Eve that really don't deal with heavy magic. PE is not an RPG, RPG but it's an RPG none the less but it kinda plays out like Resident Evil and It's kinda spooky. But it kinda has a magic thing in it but it's not a big factor. Play a demo or rent it first to see if you like it. It's only on PS one from what I've seen.

Parasite Eve's "magic" stemmed from the mutant mitochondia in the main character's cells not anything really magical. It's not a pure Rpg however, it's a Rpg/Survival Horror hybrid.

Lol, now we're gettin technical. Yeah, I've been looking for some RPG's that don't rely so heavily on magic too so I can really appreciate this thread. Thanks to all the people who posted some games, I'll be looking for them :thumb:

I'd be weary of Ephemeral Phantasia, it's loaded with sexual innuendo.

I thought Parasite Eve had a lot of sex in it too. . .Ugh.

I will recommend the Harvest Moon games. The only objectionable things there are occasional references to a "goddess" which is entirely fictional (i.e. festival, a few optional plot events, and a church in town that you can ignore) and (once again optional) alcohol use. This is as good as it gets: the only *bad* content is optional and it's not even *that* bad.

Na MillyFan who told you that about PE? I haven't seen any Sex in it even though the rating is M and it says it has Mature Sexual Themes in it. But the only thing I saw so far is that Aya wears a dress at the begining that has a really big slit on the side but you don't even see anything but her leg. So I haven't beat it yet so I can not say for sure that it is free of any sex but so far There has been no sex.

Um... Benu... PE got away with a lot... Maybe you didn't pick up... Loads of nudity, and a generally nasty lot of things... Especially the last boss (or was it second to last?) it was nasty if you actually figure out what it is...
thats not a tail, and those arent just padding for him to sit on...
It's sexual from end to end... And it's just nasty... It seriously left me with a bad feeling... Oops... you said you haven't beaten it yet... yeah, that warning was there fora reason... It wasn't rated M for the violence...

Funny... As much as I hated the game after that, I loved the movie... but I still haven't seen all of it... I missed a big chunk in the middle...

Whoa... My Deja Vu is coming back...

First of all, there wasn't "loads of nudity." Eve was wearing a somewhat revealing costume early in the game but she wasn't nude. Later in the game, there is some slight nudity on Eve's last 2 forms but it's not "loads" nor is it gratuitous or detailed. There is some talk about sperm and artificial ensemination that plays key plot points. Those are the general reasons most people believe it got a Mature Sexual Themes rating.

I disagree with the thing about the last boss. I have not heard that before and I certainly didn't notice anything sexual about him. Creepy perhaps but not sexual. Even secular boards like GameFAQs list the reasons I stated above whenever people ask. Are you sure you're not reading too much into things?

That said, I don't recommend Parasite Eve. There are other much better games out there. Plus, although I don't agree with Bob the Duck's post, some of the content will still be somewhat offensive to Christians.

Okay, change of subject:
A game series I thought of that has zero magic in it is the Front Mission series. I haven't played the games too much. They are Strategy RPG's like Final Fantasy Tactics except they use robots/mecha in a near-future setting instead of fantasy characters. Front Mission 3 is available on Playstation 1(if you can find it). Word of warning though: From what I've played of the series, they are somewhat difficult.

Yea thanks for clearing that up Bob I was about to Tell you off!! :mutter:  Na just kidding Bob you know I woudn't do that. But really there is that much Nudity and Sexual stuff? :eyebrow: Like I said I haven't beat it but I Haven't seen any nudity so far or "bizzare porn" as you called it. But yea it can be really offensive so sorry I didn't mention that before about PE. :forehead: But Approch PE with caution!

I'm not the only one who noticed...
It's sexual organs on the back of that last boss... It's not a tail... It's not butt cheeks, it's sexual organs... It wasn't as noticable when it was a baby but when it becomes an adult, it is definately sexual organs... Everyone I was with saw it about the same time... THe baby's sexual organs were reversed, so it looked like a tail but when he became an adult, the extra bit was added making it perfectly clear that was a phallus and accompaniments...that's what I was reffering to as bizarre porn, Benu... but maybe I can't call it porn... Maybe just something I didn't feel like seeing... However, there's no doubt about what it was. Oh, and you see a naked pregnant eve, and you fight a much more lean, sculpted and naked eve after she gives birth...
People have such a hard time with my telling the truth about it... I'm not making it up... I'm not reading too much into it, or trying really hard to find it... I wasn't expecting anything like that when I saw it... Geez... If you don't want to read something that could be like that, listen to my warnings... I put those there to tell people what's there...

I may have been exaggerating a bit on "sexual from end to end" but It did give me a very bad feeling... It's just not a good game...

What I don't understand is why you and your friends saw it and no one else has seen it? I did a bit of research around the internet before I ever played the game as to what the "Mature Sexual Themes" meant.
The reasons that I found were the reasons I stated above. You are the first who has mentioned anything sexual about the last boss.

*shrugs*
I guess it's possible... I don't know.

if you are looking for a rpg with no magic there is about fifteen games for the ps and ps2 I have about all rpg for the ps ps2. One of the best rpg without magic is front mission 3 for the ps a rpg/strategy game for me it is 4.5out of 5 in the game rating system.
I n September of 2012 Megaroad-01 was launched with an escort of fleet of zentraedi warships. From that point on the mass-production of the Megaroad -class colony ship began and soon long-range colony fleets were routinely being launched from earth solar system at a rate of 1-2 per year.
In September of 2022 Megaroad-19 colony ship with it’s escort fleet left earth and headed south fifteen degrees to the right of the southern star. On a mission with three objection; One to search for a planet to colonize, two to see what the rim of the galaxy looks like, three to see if any zentraedi fleets are out there. On July 21, 2025 Megaroad-19 entered its ninth star system and named it the sierra system.
Orbiting the third planet is an asteroid that was some ten miles in size, and a moon that was named Karla.

Personally the nudity is a small part of the game. You could say that violence or that evolution or other such things are a much more integral part of the game. Personally Parasite Eve was one of the best Action RPGs of all time in my book. Besides part of phalluses an such require one to have a dirty mind. I mean one person could look at "tomato" an pronounce it "to-ma-to" or "To-may-to". Not to mention that the so called "last boss" isn't technically the last boss. Parasite Maya is actually the last boss: See Crystler Tower in EX Mode. Not to mention from the culture in which it came from, nudity isn't as much of a big deal, and it's seen closer to art. Much like the sculpture of David naked. I think your just being a lil paranoid/reading into it too much. There's plenty to love about the game. Besides that's like saying the Aliens in Aliens are nude, an thus it's pornographic, or that animals are living in sin becuz they don't wear clothes or have sexual relations with more then one partner.

It doesn't require a dirty mind to see that... [button="once again, age warning"]The tail had a head, and there was a sack hanging from it with two loose sides... I hate to keep getting graphic like this, but I have to warn you[/button] even though it wasn't completely human, it was still nasty and it was human enough... I don't like your accusation, either. Just because you didn't see that doesn't mean that's not what was there... I may pay closer attention to games than you do... Or, maybe because I wasn't the one playing I was able to pay closer attention, but it wasn't hard to see... and I didn't have to have it suggested to me.
