Gphoria

I watched 2/3 of Gphoria yesterday. It's G$TechTV's award show...
Well, as for the awards, there was some cool stuff...The most important thing being the "Lifetime achievement award" given to Hideo Kojima... I was shouting and cheering at that!
There was one MAJOR oversight, however... Any "Hot video game female" list without Cheryl "Heather" Mason isn't worth the rusty tape it's recorded on.
The actual show, however, was INCREDIBLY low brow... Stupid bands that had NOTHING to do with most of the games, an award given to snoop dog, and some of the presenters and the hosts... Porn stars and Anna Nicole Smith??? Man... So incredibly sophomoric...
Then, there was the award given to Ninja Gaiden for best graphics... I will not deny they look great, but it was very much due to resting on the X-box's capability, while Silent Hill 3 had much more work put into the characters... It may not run on the hardware that Ninja Gaiden does, but the award isn't for system power, but for graphics... I think the uber-realistic human characters and great style was much better than the slick shiny people and monsters, and the bump mapping and fabric effects in Ninja Gaiden... I mean, it was made by a mostly american crew, when the original was Japanese... It's just too far separated from its origins, but the award was for graphics, and I think SH3 ruled the field in that respect...

Chazz, I understand your being upset, but we gotta be carefull not to offend here, which is why we avoid political discussions and why arguments and debates usually get shut down very quickly... There are a lot of views about things like language, so just make note of it and avoid it in the future... Trust me, it is very hard for me to avoid the "p" word here, but it bugs people so I try not to say it... I have learned to replace it with "angry" and replacing a certain "a" word with "fastidious" While the former may not be as strong of a word as I wanted it to be, and the latter sounds a bit stuck up, it's just not worth offending people for no reason other than clinging blindly to "freedom of speech" It's best not to make enemies over truly small issues.
(says the man with the log in his eye)
Um... Yeah, I miss TechTV too... I also wish they'd ditch wired for sex and Unscrewed... Oh, and those "girls gone wild" ads and informercials they run (though they don't compare to the ads Cartoon Network ran for Stroker and Hoop that was just nasty..)
The actual awards were ok, except for Hottest character award... Oh, and best graphics... Silent Hill 3 should have won that easily...

I watched about 30 seconds of Gphoria before I became thoroughly disgusted with it. Honestly, if I hadn't know that I was on the right channel, I could have sworn that I was watching MTV
.
In my opinion, the point of shows like Gphoria (and most of the stuff on G4, for that matter) making video games appear as "mainstream" as possible by imitating the kind of garbage that surrounds pop music and movies. While this may be good from a marketing standpoint, it alienates hardcore gamers, while will be the foundation of the industry if video games ever being to wane in popularity. Since this will probably happen at some point in the near future, all of the glitter and lights of G4 will ultimately hurt the video game industry.
I do prefer TechTV programming to G4. TechTV actually has more useful information, rather than a series that focuses on the favorite games of the stars. I really don't care how many football players and rappers like Madden 2004...I'll never buy it.
I do have a question for those that watched. Did the show actually feature any music that is from a real game, or was it just big name bands designed to boost ratings?

Yeah Gphoria was a complete joke --I can't believe what has become of the G4/Tech TV merging, I too want to petition for Tech TVs' return. And the awards show itself was full of nothing but rappers, strippers and bad host. Why was Gran Theft Auto Vice City still be nominated, that game came out like two years ago.
And Cbwing...none of the actual music composers were in present form, Flock of Seagulls did the Vice City theme song we all know by now and there were some other bands, all of which had nothing to do with the games.

I am personally going to beat those IDIOTS for sanctioning that Rikku cosplay.
That was freaking HORRENDOUS.
How DARE they defile such an awesome character like that.
And then they gave her an award for being the "Hottest Video Game Character".
How juvenile. I hate them. They're taking a deep character and making her seem like a shallow, cheap pin-up girl.
G4 stinks.

that was pretty stupid... more stupit that Heather wasn't nominated, though... Well, different kinds of stupid, I suppose... Also, Stan Lee mispronounced Hideo Kojima, and sorta made tongue in cheek comments like "a household name" and didn't look like he even wanted to be there... Of course, him cosplaying as Revolver Ocelot was cool, and I think if you all had seen that, you would have found SOMETHING redeeming from that travesty... I'm glad they gave credit where credit was due with Kojima...
You're right, though... The show was juvenile and some of those people should be shot...

Best Game: Star Wars: Knigts of the Old Republic
Hottest Character: Rikku (FF10-2)
Best alternative sports game: Tony Hawk Underground
Best Traditional sports game: I forget... Some football game...
Most innovative: Viewtiful Joe
Best Handheld: I dont' remember... I think it was "Final Fantasy Tactics: Advanced"
Lifetime Achievement Award: Hideo Kojima (the best part of teh show! Even Stan Lee's cosplaying as Revolver Ocelot! Yay! Stan Lee mispronounced Kojima's name though... Grr... And he made a joke like he didn't really want to be giving the award away... a bunch of the hosts were like that... Stuck up jerks)
Best graphics went to Ninja Gaiden, though i voted for SH3... I just think more people played Ninja Gaiden because it is more mainstream type of game than SH3...
There were best racing game and a few others as well, but I don't remember them...
