Are you an item hoarder?

Postby TheMelodyMaker » Sun Jan 11, 2004 9:22 pm

Typically, whenever I play through an RPG (or any kind of game, for that matter), I have a tendency to conserve my consumable items as much as I can until the big boss fight at the end of the game. How about you? As a general rule, do you hoard items and use them sparingly, or do you go all out and have a party with them? Let your votes be cast! ^_^

I hoard them, baby! And then, I don't even USE them against the final boss because I forget I have them! LOL

I use them frequently...but I don't get crazy with it. I try to have a lot of money so I can buy more stuff when my supply starts getting low. For healing my people I usually use techniques. ^_^; *shrug* I never said I was good at RPGs XD

Hi. My name is uc pseudonym, and I'm an item hoarder.

Everyone: Hi uc!

Yes, I hoard items. When necessary, I will use items, but most of the time my healing techniques are far more effective. As for destructive items... I rarely use them, but occasionally with healing characters in final battles.

One thing I have done: in Super Mario RPG, I use my Rock Candy and Red Essences fighting Culex. I really am saving it for that battle.

I'm an item hoarder. I'll use them along the way, but usually I'll use other techniques to heal and such. It does depend on the style of the game though. Some games there are restrictions on how much inventory you can carry. One of the RPGs I've played (Arcanum) you have "followers" that come along, and I've taken to dumping things in their inventory (which they'll use if they see fit). Morrowind I used a house to store all those scrolls and potions that I was saving for a rainy day which was usually on the other side of the world when I needed them, so they never get used

Games like FF7 I tend to buy up all the health restore and "ether" potions I can get my hands on, then use them up in the "dungeons." The difference seems to be in that the above two games it's much easier to restore both your HP as well as Fatigue/Mana for doing other stuff (you can sleep almost anywhere to restore them), where games like FF7 requires a bed or a tent to do that.

I like to keep more healing items than I need, so that if I get into a tough spot, although I usually play melee characters, so I keep very few mana potions (o their equivalent). However, healing spells/techniques are almost always better.

I'm an item hoarder BIG TIME. And like Ink, I usually won't end up using them even in the final battle. Sometimes when my brother and I will play rpgs together (the ones like FFIX where the party can be configured to be controlled by a second player) I remember threatening him on pain of death not to use anything that we couldn't buy.

Once, he used an elixir when he really didn't need to (he panicked on a boss battle, poor boy) and I went into the menu and configured it so he could only control Quina. It stayed like that until he promised never to use another elixir unless I told him to.

I am pretty much somewhat of an item hoarder myself.

Healing items, I like to have a lot of, just in case and I try save the really potent stuff(Megapotion, etc.) for the tougher boss battles.

Status-curing items are not as important, but I like to have some handy.

Attack items, I tend to save and forget to ever use as they are not usually very useful anyway although Mixing them together in FFX and FFX-2 has yielded some pretty potent moves so I've used Mix to some extent.

Temperary stat-boost items, I tend to hoard and forget to use.

Permenent stat-boost items, I either hoard or use them right then depending on certain factors.

Weapons, Armor, and Accessories: If I need cash, I tend to sell old stuff but otherwise I tend to hoard them immensely.

You should see my inventory on Tales of Phantasia.
Note that the hoarding generally doesn't apply on games that have limited inventories(Grandia, Golden Sun, etc.).

Hmmm... I'm not really an item hoarder, more of a unprepared gamer, sometimes in the item department. ;) In RPGs I usely just try to level up really really high, rely on healing spells, and such... I just spend my money randomly on shiny weapons. Well, it hasn't failed me yet...

When I discovered the joy that is amway, er I mean using items in battle, I can't hoard them anymore... I usually just buy craploads so I can use them as much as I want... I never go anywhere without 99 potions...

I usually always walk around with 99 Potions... mainly because by the time I need them, they heal so little that it isn't worth it. Or just about any other item, but on occasion I need Phoenix Downs.

I'm the same way, I'd walk around with 99 potions, then later, when hi-potions, or even full-healing potions are ready, i'd sell all my potions, and lo and behold! Instant sale at s-mart!

usually use them all frequently (makes the game fun that way, in a way), but really depends on the game. on FF series i most likely spend all my money on buying items. a lot of items, and actually use them all. but on games like Pokemon, i get so much TMs that i just find whatever i find on the PC. and i have never taken something out from the PC. never. not even once. not even a pokemon i believe.

I also end up being a money hoarder. I generally have way more than I need by the end of the game. This is annoying in the Mario based rpgs, where there is a maximum that is rather easy to reach. I find myself squandering my money on things just so new money I get doesn't vanish.

I just don't feel right unless I have every weapon in the game. Even if it sucks I'll get it.

I do that too, although I try to be a little more choosy about buying weapons, armor, accessories, etc. ("Choosy", as in, I choose those with the highest attack/defense levels regardless of what special effects they carry.)

ANY elixers or ethers are used VERY sparingly as a rule. Only if I absolutely need them. I also make it a point to at some point in the game aquire 99 potions, Super Potions, Heals, ect.

AM I A HOARDER?! YOU BET!! The first two or three times I played through Ocarina of Time, I didn't use a single Deku Nut. I still don't, except occationally when I feel like throwing one... _-_

And I'm always afraid to use rare (expendable) items...

Majora's Mask annoyed me a lot in that regard, in that you lose all your items. Generally I always run around with everything full, but this made it so that I actually had to restock at times. I suppose it does make all the items you find somewhat relevant, but still...

Depends on the game. Most of the RPG's I've played, magic and inns pretty much suffice, and I don't really hoard items per se, I just end up not using them. But then, in most of the big boss fights, anything less than the highest level healing potion really won't heal you enough to stay ahead of the damage--I use high level magic instead. So I guess I'm not much of an item user in general--I focus on obtaining magics and weapons/armors.

There are a few games where I've saved those healing items, though--megalixers came in handy with certain parties fighting at the end of Chrono Trigger, and I always needed a lot of potions on hand for the final Temple of Fiends in FF.

it is a horrible problem... but yes i am a hoarder. my friend is a collector, he must have at least one of every item, weapon, shield... so on. when you get into it that far its almost like the game is work and not for fun. so i have been recently trying to just enjoy stuff... i try. :) but man its hard to kick the habit.

Somehow it just makes sense to me that if you're going to use up your inventory, the best time to do it is after the final save point when you know you aren't going to be saving again anyway. (Then it's time to bring out the big guns. :thumb: )
