i dunno if anyone else knew about this, but there was at one time a fan-based attempt at remaking chrono trigger into a 3d style rpg, i saw some screenshots and it was beautiful, however square/enix sent them a warm fuzzy cease and desist order so they had to put that to a stop, when i first heard about them killing the project it made me wonder if maybe they were gonna do one of their own, but alas, that was years ago and i haven't heard a word about anything like it since

I'd heard about that. I wish Square had funded it, instead of kicking it. XD Really, it would have been amazing.

Bobtheduck wrote:There is more to that story, like Magus... What happened to him (and, sorry RD, but the Radical Dreamers explanation doesn't count in the canon, as awesome as that would have been... I tried to tell myself that was true, but it's not)?
I wasn't suggesting that Guile and Magus are one in the same. What I was saying is that the producers of the game were going to have Guile show himself as Magus, but decided to trash the idea altogether and just use Guile as another character, since they chose to have so many characters. I read it in an interview with the creators once.

My theory on that, though, has always been that maybe Guile IS Magus/Magil, but not in the dimension in which you find him. In the Dead Sea at Chronopolis (I think that's where the conversation takes place, anyways), Serge and party stumble upon a recording of Kid, Serge, and Magil, giving a nice throwback to the Radical Dreamers game. One of the characters then suggests that the events took place in yet another dimension, saying that there may be more dimensions than just the two you travel between in the game. Considering that Kid and Guile are both characters that don't have dopplegangers in the Home World, I think it's a relatively plausible theory. XD

Either way, I always name Guile Magil whenever I get him in my party, just to satisfy my own whims. XD
Bobtheduck wrote:
Lucca is given the opportunity to save Lara, they reason at first that Lavos must be the one responsible for the time gates, but one of them (Lucca, I think) says that she thinks someone else was responsible for it... From Schala's introduction to the end of the game, her place is hinted at.
Actually...
"The entity" is not Schala. What it actually is, and blame this on translation differences for the English version, is the Planet itself. Constantly in the Japanese version of Trigger the Planet is referred to as a living thing, and it is heavily implied in the original that the Planet knew of its demise since Lavos buried itself millions of years ago, and was waiting for a group worthy of saving it.

The Planet being the one who created the gates, as well as its sentience, is further proven in Cross when the Planet itself pulls Terra Tower into the present to counteract Chronopolis.

Guile's Japanese name is Alfador...you may remember Alfador as Janus' cat in Trigger. No, I'm not saying Janus' cat is Guile. XD I'm just saying that it's another link between Magus and Guile.
that's right, i do remember reading that somewhere....

ya know, for games with almost completely different character lineups, there sure are a lot of connections between the two, unlike an other rpg series i won't mention....

Chrono resurrection... This is why when working on a work that could draw C&D, you should release alphas and betas whenever possible... At least open the work up to another hacker who may want to take it on!

CR was going to use fully orchestrated versions of CT music, and beautifully rendered, PS2 style graphics... The only character model that was finished, however, was Crono... In terms of assets, they were very very very far off from finishing it...

Hopefully it is fine to leave spoiler tags off for just one quote...
Bobtheduck wrote:I think it's perfectly OK for characters, even main Characters, to die between stories, though it is rare.

This would be the point where I disagree. If someone is a main character, they should be dealt with in a more direct manner. I don't think either of us wants to get into if they actually had this all planned or not (we don't really have all that much to go on) but ultimately I'm still unsatisfied by what was in CT.

I wouldn't have a problem with an overall story about Schala, but the fact is that she was not the main character in CT. If she had been more directly involved and felt integral (and then later revealed to be behind much more) I'd be more accepting, but the way things are it feels revisionist.

Heh. I think I prefer the Final Fantasy style overall, however, to most methods of sequels. It especially breaks suspension of disbelief when you find the old characters mysteriously without their powers. If you want to do a linked sequel, however, I think that the premise for CC is pretty much the way to do it: same world, similar plot elements, but different characters/time.

in a way, sort of like a story that takes place within the other story

heh, if you do it that way sequels really can be infinite

I dont know if it means anything to you guys, but Gamespot gave Chrono Cross a 10/10 rating. They have only done that with 4 games total. For me that is a big deal, now I am "definately" going to play Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. On a sidenote, are either of these games available for GBA or the Wii's Virtual Console?

Neither are available for the GBA; not sure about the Wii, though. The two most prominent (and legal XD) ways that I know of to come by these games is to get Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PS1, which includes Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV, and Chrono Cross, also for PS1.

I highly disagree with the 10/10 rating.

8/10 at the most.

Not 10/10.

But that's my biased opinion.

Squ'eenix hasn't allowed any of their games except rad racer onto virtual console... They make too much money on their own remakes and re releases without conforming to the 6 dollar limit for SNES games... Also, Chrono Cross was on PS1, which is playable on PS3 (actually, I heard that Chrono cross was one of about 20 or so PS1 games that do NOT work on PS3, but the point stands) Chrono Trigger may happen on VC someday, but never CC...

I do agree with the 10/10... I rank this higher than the Playstation Final Fantasy games, personally (though I probably rate FF6 higher, or at least equal, simply due to scope)... Of course, my tastes don't always line up with the popular opinion...

Actually, they just released Actraiser on the VC last week, and Super Mario RPG is scheduled to come out eventually as well.

I completely forgot about Actraiser... Hmm... Still, Actraiser was Enix, not Square... I think, despite the merger, they handle their respective licenses quite differently.

Mario RPG, though... I'm kinda wondering about that... It was supposed to be a launch game for VC... Wonder how long they'll keep pushing it back, and maybe that's why...
